Dr. Sophia Youn is a General Psychiatry Resident at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center (JHMC) in Queens, NY, and a current Doctoral Fellow in the American Psychiatric Association Foundation (APA-F) Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) for the 2024-2025 class. She earned her D.O. from Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in Harlem, NY in 2021 and anticipates completing her residency at JHMC in 2025.
Dr. Youn’s interest in the MFP stemmed from her passion for serving diverse minority groups, which aligned closely with the goals and mission of the MFP. Reflecting on her experiences at JHMC, she shared, “I applied for the opportunity to further assist the very diverse minority population of Jamaica Hospital Medical Center.”
When asked about the program’s impact on her professional development, she highlighted how it has facilitated meaningful connections with mentors and fellow residents, enhancing both her academic and clinical journey. She stated, “Through the program, I have been able to attend conferences. I have also had the opportunity to mentor students as well as find mentorship.”
During her time in the MFP, Dr. Youn has developed psychoeducation materials tailored to the Indo-Guyanese patients at JHMC. She plans to continue these endeavors post-graduation in her career as a child and adolescent psychiatrist.
Dr. Youn advises those considering the MFP to seize the opportunity: “Everyone should apply!” She also expressed gratitude for the program, stating, “I am happy to have this opportunity.”
