Edmound M. Davis is a doctoral fellow in the 2022-2023 class of the Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) with the Foundation for the Advancement of Human Systems (FAHS). Edmound received a B.S. in psychology from Florida State University and a M.S. in marriage and family therapy from Nova Southeastern University, where he is currently a doctoral student in the couples and family therapy program. His research interests include trauma-informed clinical approaches and child, adolescent, and young adult development. In addition to his academic pursuits, Edmound is a licensed marriage and family therapist with aspirations to open a private practice in the near future.
Edmound was drawn to the MFP because of the program’s opportunities for implementing changes in treatment practices as they relate to trauma. He shared, “I was driven by my passion for the field of family therapy and enhancing best practices for how mental health providers treat trauma and trauma-related symptoms. Also, SAMHSA’s priority areas and core principles intrigued me and ignited further interest in promoting resilience and emotional health for children, youth, and families and for strengthening the behavioral health workforce.”
Reflecting on how the MFP has enriched his academic and professional career, Edmound shared that his experience as a fellow has provided tremendous opportunities for growth and educational development. He stated, “Being a part of this program has allowed me to push myself out of my comfort zone. I find myself diving deeper into my research and growing from there.”
Participating in the MFP allows Edmound opportunities to build and nurture his professional network. He went on to say, “MFP has offered me an opportunity to work closely with other MFP fellows who can help if I feel stuck somewhere along the way. I hope to attend an in-person conference for the program soon, and I look forward to connecting with people and broadening my professional network.”
After completing his Ph.D., Edmound’s career goals include conducting therapy and actively participating in research and community work. He explained, “Upon graduation, I plan to continue my work in the community through a non-profit mental health agency for which I have worked for a few years.”
When asked if he had advice for anyone considering applying to the MFP, Edmound replied, “I highly recommend this opportunity for anyone who has a drive for community work and strengthening mental health for all!”
